The CSUMC Child Preschool is getting a jump on childhood obesity prevention through the Gold Sneaker initiative. The Gold Sneaker initiative was developed to enhance policy related to physical activity and nutrition within licensed child care facilities across Tennessee. Policies to enact will include minimum requirements on physical activity, sedentary activities, breastfeeding, meal time, behaviors, portion sizes, and a tobacco-free facility.
Child care facilities that implement the proposed enhanced physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco policies will earn a "Gold Sneaker" award which designates them as a "Gold Sneaker" child care facility. We received recognition through a certificate, decals, stickers, website recognition, and some new equipment. A report was made by Beth Cooper-Libby about the Preschool's "Working hard and Eating well class" at a workshop sponsored by the Knox County Health Dept. The preschool used some of the funds from the grant and sponsored a cooking class for our families April 12th. We wanted to support our children and their families by spending time together by offering a FREE class for families coordinated with UT. The curriculum was called "working and eating well" -- a cooking class for busy parents. Child care was provided and at the end of the class all of the families and volunteers ate together.
